Actually, it's just that there hasn't obviously been above ground growth. There has been some above ground destruction.
I don't know what it is that goes after zinnias and not any of the others, but I have a suspicion. When I went to pull away a few of the fresh weeds, I found an earwig struggling in the spider's web behind the mint. I think earwigs might well be zinnia-feasters.However, so far the attacks have been only on the one by the mint and the next one over. I'll learn to live with a little bit of attrition and figure out what to put in next year instead.
